Pregnancy & Depression

While postpartum depression has become widely understood and accepted over the years, depression during pregnancy remains a rather obscure mental health issue. By increasing awareness and erasing the stigma of these mental health issues, we hope more women who, like Bei Bei, suffer from perinatal depression, will seek proper treatment without guilt or fear.

Policing pregnancy is part of the larger trend of using the criminal justice system as a "solution" to complex issues in ways that fall most harshly on vulnerable populations. In Bei Bei Shuai's case, mental illness was treated with prison and prosecution. Bei Bei's story focuses sharply on the disproportionately high rates of depression and suicide for Asian women and the concurrent lack of access to appropriate services.
